Math Courses at Wilmington University
Students are exposed to a wide variety of opportunities in college. Many alumni have had rewarding careers after their success in academics at Wilmington University. Majors, such as mathematics majors, have many options for classes to take in order to get their degree. Here are 10 mathematics courses provided at Wilmington University.
1. MAT 110: Math Essentials
This is a 3 credit course that provides a basic introduction to linear functions. Topics include identify, simplify, and evaluate polynomials. There will be focus on systems graph linear equations, and inequalities. Sara Andersen is the professor for this course.
2. MAT 205: Introductory Survey of Mathematics
Professor Sara Andersen introduces algebra, probability, and statistics in MAT 205. There will be different sections in this 3 credit class. Algebraic topics include solving and graphing quadratic and exponential functions. Topics in probability include counting principles, combinations, permutations, compound events, mutually exclusive events, and independent events. Topics in statistics include measures of central tendency, measures of dispersion, and the normal curve.
3. MAT 308: Inferential Statistics
This 3 credit course introduces the student to the scientific method of collecting, organizing, and interpreting data in real-world applications. Topics include behavioral science, communication, education, healthcare, manufacturing, and natural science. Students will use graphing calculators when solving and analyzing data. James Andersen is one of the professors for the course.
4. MAT 310: Calculus I
This course focuses on students' understanding and application of limits, continuity, and techniques for finding the derivative. Students will use derivatives in graphing functions, applications of the derivative, implicit differentiation, anti-derivatives, and areas under the curve. Topics include the Fundamental Theorem of Calculus, integration by substitution, and differential equations. Mrs. Donna McQuill is the instructor.
5. MAT 312: Business Statistics
This 3-credit course introduces the student to the scientific method of collecting, organizing, and interpreting data. These skills will be used in a variety of business applications. Andersen, J requires students to be familiar with Excel to assist in displaying and analyzing data.
6. MAT 313: Experimental Design
William Harris is the instructor for this course. This course develops concepts and practices for designing and conducting experiments, along with analyzing experimental results. Topics include randomization, replication, blocking, factorial design, ANOVA, and surveys. This 3 credit course will let students develop a research question, design an experiment, and collect and analyze the data in an overall course project.
7. MAT 331: Geometry
This 3 credit course studies the core concepts and principles of Euclidean geometry in two and three dimensions. Topics include geometric constructions, congruence, similarity, transformations, measurement, and coordinate geometry. There will be emphasis on axiomatic systems and proofs. An overview of non-Euclidean geometries is provided by professor E. Bloch.
8. MAT 332: History of Mathematics
Andersen, Hileman provides an overview of the historical evolution of major concepts in mathematics. Topics include counting and number systems, geometry, algebra, calculus, and statistics. The course ranges from Babylonia and Egypt through Greece and the Middle East to the modern world are reviewed. The interrelationship between the evolution of mathematics, science, and technology is explored in this 3 credit course.
9. MAT 200: Pre-Calculus
This 3 credit course provides an integrated review of intermediate algebra, analytic geometry, and basic trigonometry in order to prepare the student for calculus. There will be emphasis on the incorporation of matrices and vectors. A minimum grade of C is required in order for students to take the course.
10. MAT 201: Mathematics for Teachers I
This class will prepare teacher candidates to become effective mathematics teachers in their own classrooms. Students will use the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics Standards and STEM strategies. Skills include modeling, collaboration, manipulatives, thinking made visible, and writing across the curriculum. There will be emphasis on analyzing math-solving processes by developing thorough explanations of their own mathematical understanding and critiquing the explanation of others’ mathematical understandings.
