After declaring a major, students often focus on taking classes within that program so they don’t end up in their fourth year without enough credits in their field. However, there is a multitude of classes that are most likely way more fun and will let you explore other fields!
Three-hour lectures are brutal; you’re sitting at a desk for hours on end and may not even be paying attention because you’re too busy looking at your Facebook news feed! That’s why is just a good idea to try a dance class. It’s a different form of teaching and it gets you up and moving! Furthermore, it’s already hard enough to find time in a busy academic schedule to get exercise; this way you get to shoot two birds with one stone!
One of the most inaccurate sentences is that “Latin is a dead language.” It’s true that Latin is not spoken in the modern world but it is the basis of all the Romance languages. That means that if you ever want to learn French, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, or Romanian, it’s going to be way easier! Not only that – learning Latin helps you understand more advanced English words you may not be familiar with. Ever wonder what “ubiquitous” means? If you have taken Latin, you would be able to figure it out simply because the Latin word for “everywhere” is “ubique”. And honestly, how proud would your parents be if you told them you were taking Latin??
Okay, so for most people, probably not as interesting as the other courses mentioned in this blog. But honestly? It’s certainly going to be useful. The majority of students are going to need to be able to write a coherent and analytical essay at some point or another, so why not learn how to do it well?
This is basically Criminal Minds, but in lecture form. Interested in the justice system? Curious about how criminals move through the interrogation process? Then this course is for you! It isn’t necessarily the easiest course at York, but if you’re interested in the subject matter, it’s definitely worth looking at!
This list wouldn’t be complete without an online course! This class isn’t just a great idea to take because it’s online (and therefore doesn’t require the long commute to the York campus!), but also because it tackles an extremely important and relevant issue. Eating disorders are prevalent in modern day society, and the more awareness is spread, the better!
The beauty of York being such a big school is that they have a huge variety of courses to choose from. Everyone has the courses they feel comfortable with – the courses they took in high school – but there is something to be said about stepping outside of that comfort zone! After all, if there was anytime to do it, it would be during university!
