Document Summary

Differences between external & in vivo microbial control. 1900"s: 1/3 of all children died of infectious disease before 5yrs of age. Term chemotherapy introduced: the use of chemicals to selectively kill pathogens while having little effect on a patient. Elrich used arsenic compounds to kill trypanosomes & treponemes. Used the term antibiotic to describe antimicrobial agents produced naturally by an organism. Possible due to differences in structures or metabolism between pathogen & hots. The more differences - easier to create an effective antimicrobial agent. Viruses - use host cell"s enzymes & ribosomes to replicate. Selectively toxic to certain fungal & bacterial cells, but not to animal cells which lack cell walls. Act by preventing cross-linking of subunits of ptg. Act by irreversibly binding to enzymes that ross link ptg sub units. But may affect the mitochondria (contains 70s ribosomes). Drugs may become incorporated into membrane & damage integrity. Fungicidal - attaches to ergosterl & causes lysis of the cell.
