Eukaryotes 2
The endomembrane system
Making, packaging and shipping proteins and molecules
A system of compartments that generally includes
all of the membrane-bound components of the
cell (including nuclear envelope) except for the
mitochondria and chloroplasts
Major functions of intracellular membranes:
Provide a surface for biochemical reactions
Establish a number of compartments to prevent
mixing
Provide for transport of materials within the cell,
from the cell to outside, or form the cell to an
adjacent cell
Endoplasmic reticulum (ER)
Considered the heart of the ER system
Consists of membrane cisternae (the pockets) that ramify through the cytoplasm
o Results in internal compartments and channels
The ER is a dynamic structure, ever changing in structure and function
If ribosomes are attached to the ER, it is the rough ER, and if ribosomes are absent, it
is the smooth ER
o There are also free ribosomes within the cell
o Smooth is more tubular
The ER provides surfaces for the synthesis of proteins, lipids and carbs
o Rough ER: proteins, Smooth ER: lipids and some carbs
o Smooth also detoxifies harmful substances
Golgi apparatus
Consists of flattened stacks of membrane or cisternae called Golgi stacks
o Usually 6-10 per stack
o Collectively, all these stacks in a cell are the Golgi apparatus
Stacks are functional extensions of the ER, and are polar structures (forming face and
mature face)
o Not physically connected but receive vesicles constantly
o Two ends are different in structure and function (polar)
Functions in the collection, packaging and distribution of molecules synthesised
elsewhere in the cell
Almost all the polysaccharide in cells is manufactured within this organelle
The polysaccharide may be attached to either protein or lipid molecules in the stacks
Lysosomes
Dust bins of the animal cell, surrounded by single membrane
