Document Summary

Hyphae: mono lament branching laments that make up a mycelium in a fungus with a large surface area to volume ratio. Mycelium: the vegetative (feeding) part of a fungus, consisting of a network of haploid hyphae. Chitin: makes up cell walls, like in insects, embedded in a matrix of polysaccharides, proteins and lipids. Septa: cross walls or a partition separating two chambers, incomplete, allow cytoplasmic continuity. Heterokaryon: multinucleate cell that contains genetically di erent nuclei, caused by fused hyphae. Dikaryon: formed by plasmogamy of compatible mating types (n+n) Non-motile spores: reproduction of fungi, long lives, haploid. Lichen: symbiotic association between fungi and algae or cyanobacteria. Mycorrhiza: symbiotic association between a fungus and the roots of a vascular host plant. Normally involved in commensal or parasitic relationships with animals. Large golgi type membrane complex beside the basal body. Axostyle, a sti rod like bunch of microtubules runs the length of the cell.
