Nuance shades of emotions are developed from 6 basic emotions: happy, sad, fear, anger, surprise, disgust. How are emotions organised: dimensions, vectors, loci, spaces. It is unitary (experience one thought/emotion at a time) William james every object that excites an instinct excites an emotion : feeling generates the behaviour. Instinctive behaviour feels like something and looks like something not just facial expression but behavioural dispositions and actions. Affective (emotional) experiences are conscious states that are accompanied by particular changes in autonomic and somatic motor activity. Duchene"s 1862 study of facial muscles that convey emotional states: stimulated peripheral muscles using electrical stimulation. Fear is to some extent innate, but also plastic integrates with areas of brain about environment (contingencies and predictors) Output: brain -> spinal cord -> thoracic sympathetic preganglionic -> sympathetic effectors: neural substrates of fear. **hypothalamus must be connected to rest of brain stem and spinal cord in order for fear response to develop.
