Mental disorder: clinically signi cant disturbance in an individual"s cognition, emotion regulation or behaviourusually associated with signi cant distress or disability in social, occupational or other important activities . Not a mental disorder: an expectable or culturally approved response to a common stressor or loss, such as the death of a love one is not a mental disorder . Considers only conditions that are rare and uncommon. Not all abnormal conditions are rare or uncommon. Not all rare of uncommon conditions are abnormal. Does this mean that being highly intelligent is abnormal. Considers conditions if behaviour causes distress or disability that is not expected. Lots of conditions cause distress or disability but is not considered disorders. Some conditions that are disorders do not cause distress. Drug abuse, mania they engage in behaviour that prevents them from meeting the demands of life. There"re situations that people should not have to adapt to.
