To this point we have considered a neo-kraepelinian" approach to mental illness. Diagnoses made on the basis of clusters of symptoms, duration and so on. An alternative approach is to consider individual symptoms transdiagnostically. Eg. hallucinations occur in a variety of mental disorders. If we can systematically understand and can alleviate individual symptoms, maybe there will be no disorder left to explain. Origin (latin): hallucinatio to wander mentally or to be absent minded. Hallucinations have historically been de ned as an aberrant perception. Are you ever in the complete absence of environmental stimuli? a perceptual event in the complete absence of an environmental stimulus. unless sensory system dysfunction the devil"s voice in the car engine. Perhaps a more comprehensive de nition might be a perceptual even in the absence of a corresponding environmental stimulus". The experience occurs when awake, resembles veridical perception, and is not under conscious control. Hallucinations can be experienced in any sensory modality.
