-
- Wakefulness system
- Acetycholinergic neurons in the Laterodorsal Tegmental Nuclei (LDT) and
Pedunculopontine Tegmental Nuclei (PPT).
- Noradrenergic neurons in the Locus Coeruleus (LC).
- Serotonergic (5HT) neurons of the Dorsal and Medial Raphe Nuclei
- Histaminergic neurons in the Tuberomamilliary Nucleus (TMN).
- Dopaminergic neurons in the Ventral Periaqueductal Grey Matter (PAG).
- Acetycholinergic neurons in the basal forebrain (BF)
- An example: Noradrenergic Pathways
- Noradrenergic cells scattered throughout the brainstem, but particularly concentrated
in Locus Coeruleus. They project to virtually all areas of the brain and specifically to
the thalamus and hypothalamic structures.
- Pharmacologic agents that promote noradrenergic activity increase wakefulness (eg.
amphetamine), while agents that inhibit noradrenergic activity, decrease wakefulness
(eg. AMPT).
- Cells in the Locus Coeruleus are more active during wakefulness than sleep.

Document Summary

Acetycholinergic neurons in the laterodorsal tegmental nuclei (ldt) and. Noradrenergic neurons in the locus coeruleus (lc). Serotonergic (5ht) neurons of the dorsal and medial raphe nuclei. Histaminergic neurons in the tuberomamilliary nucleus (tmn). Dopaminergic neurons in the ventral periaqueductal grey matter (pag). Acetycholinergic neurons in the basal forebrain (bf) Noradrenergic cells scattered throughout the brainstem, but particularly concentrated in locus coeruleus. They project to virtually all areas of the brain and specifically to the thalamus and hypothalamic structures. Pharmacologic agents that promote noradrenergic activity increase wakefulness (eg. amphetamine), while agents that inhibit noradrenergic activity, decrease wakefulness (eg. ampt). Cells in the locus coeruleus are more active during wakefulness than sleep. Orexin/hypocretin neurons: master controller that controls other regions. Cell bodies located in the lateral hypothalamus, hypocretin/orexin is the neurotransmitter. Have excitatory projections to tmn, raphe, lc, ppt, ldt, and bf as well as to the cortex itself.
