LEC 20: Mechanisms of Inheritance
Modes of inheritance:
o Dominant: present in each generation
o Recessive: skips a generation
o Sex-linked: trait on sex chromosome(s), therefore depends on the sex of the
offspring if they are affected
Autosomal dominant: Never skips generation, ½ affected
X-linked dominant: Never skips a generation, all sisters affected all brothers normal
or ½ affected (both sexes) M<F
X-linked recessive: skips generations (female carriers), all sisters normal, ½ brothers
affected M>F
Autosomal recessive: skips generation, ¼ affected
Y-linked (very unlikely): male to male, all brothers affected, males only
Mitochondrial genes: mitochondria DNA is maternally inherited only
Mapping genes: fewer recombinants in a testcross, the closer the genes are on the
chromosome
Incomplete dominance: results in offspring with a blend of parent phenotypes
Codominance: results in offspring with both parental phenotypes shown (not
blended)
