An intense preoccupation with weight and shape issues an an expression fo self-worth is common to all people who suffer from an eating disorder. 90% of anorexics and bulimeics are women. Eating disorder not otherwise specified: binge eating disorder. Obesity not generally regarded as psychiatric disorder. Individual: perfectionism, lack of control in other life areas, history of sexual abuse. Familial: maintenance of equilibrium in dysfunctional family. Cultural factors: prevalent in industrialised socities, idealisation of thinness in media. Career choice are expected to be thin e. g. ballerinas, models. Fhx of mood disorders, eating disorders or substance abuse. Concurrent associated mental illness depression, ocd, anxiety disorder, substance use. Low bp, low hr, significant orthostatic changes, syncopal episodes, low temperature, vitamin deficiencies. Neurologic grand mal seziures ( ca, mg, po4) Cutaneous dry skin, lunago hair, hair loss, brittle nails, yellow skin from high carotene.
