PSYC1020 Lecture Notes - Lecture 8: Visual Cortex, Binocular Rivalry, Scotoma
Document Summary
Part b: lecture 8: sensation and perception 2. The brain can respond to things that are not consciously experienced by us. There are other regions in the brain (aside from the primary visual cortex) where activity of cells correlates better to conscious perception. Primary visual cortex: the first cortical area to receive visual input, located at the back of the brain, cortical scotoma. Subconscious v1: the above experiments show there is poor correlation between v1 activity and conscious experience. It is suggested that v1, although not for perception, may be involved for other types of visual operation. Monkey with removed v1: an experiment using a monkey with both v1 removed, the monkey is still able to navigate way around obstacles and can plan grasping movements. Humans with damaged v1: hu(cid:373)a(cid:374)s (cid:449)ho (cid:272)a(cid:374)(cid:374)ot (cid:272)o(cid:374)s(cid:272)iousl(cid:455) (cid:858)see(cid:859) a(cid:374)(cid:455)thi(cid:374)g. the(cid:455) ad(cid:373)it the(cid:455) are (cid:271)li(cid:374)d, humans with damaged v1 can still navigate around obstacles without touching them.
