- Assessment, feedback and reporting is a unique form of communication to students, parents and the
community
Message Received
- Sender - Receiver - Message
- Groundwater Smith appropriately points out that we have been communicating since birth but
interestingly enough, some of us are still not masters at communicating.
- The complex process of communication revolves around the fact that a message is sent and then
received and then interpreted. The final “message” received is not always the intended ‘sent”
message. Why? What affects the quality of communication?
- Given that research tells us we interact with our students about a thousand times a day the quality
of these interactions is crucial.
What Affects Communication?
- Groundwater-Smith lists a number of possible factors taken from a NSW Dept of Education
document.
- Self concept of sender
Personalities of sender and receiver
Attitudes beliefs and values of the sender
Perceptions and assumptions each has of each other
Expectations each has of each other
Cultural differences
- The power and status of each
Personal presentation
The number of people being communicated with
The degree of familiarity between the two
The distance or space between the two
- Importance of the message
The symbolic system used Eg emails, texts, face book
