Course Description:
Why are some countries rich and others poor? If high oil prices cause the loonie to rise, how are Ontario manufacturers
affected? Why were mortgage interest rates above 20% in 1981 but below 5% in 2013? Macroeconomic analysis,
which considers the behaviour of the entire economy, can answer questions like these.

Course Objectives/ Learning Outcomes:
In this course, students will better understand economic principles and develop critical thinking in analyzing economic
issues reported in the media. They will understand how economics relates to the everyday life of individuals,
businesses and society overall, as well as the role government policies can play in influencing the economy.
Course Materials:
Required book: Macroeconomics: Fifteenth Canadian Edition, C. T. S. Ragan, Toronto: Pearson, 2016.
MyEconLab (MEL) Online Access (Pearson, 2016).
The Dalhousie bookstore carries a bundle combining the textbook (Loose-Leaf) and required MyEconLab software for
$97.36.
You will need to use a calculator for class exercises and exams. The only calculators allowed in exams will be simple
(non programmable) calculators. Any other calculator will be taken away during the exam. If in doubt, don’t hesitate
checking with your professor before the exam date.

Midterm Exam 30% of final grade February 27, 8:30-10:00 p.m.

Other course requirement:
There will be six online quizzes with the best five counted. You will have one week to complete your quizzes.
Tutorials are available but not required. You may attend any tutorial, even if you are not enrolled in that session, as
long as there is sufficient space to accommodate all enrolled students. Tutorials will begin on January 15, 2018.

The midterm exam will be held on Tuesday, February 27, 8:30-10 p.m. Locations will be announced later and posted
to Brightspace. The midterm will not be held in your regular classroom.
The final exam will be comprehensive. Travel arrangements must not be made that will conflict with the final
examination period, April 12-26.
To pass the course, a student must earn an overall mark of at least 50%, and must earn a mark of 50% or more on the
final exam.
Other course requirements:
This course has a Brightspace page for all registered students; see https://dal.brightspace.com for details. Marks, and
announcements will all be posted to Brightspace. There is also two discussion boards, one to post questions or
comments on the material covered in class, and the other to post comments or questions related to grades and overall
administration of the course. It is essential that you familiarise themselves with how to use the Brightspace system.
Workload:
Typically, you will need to spend 4 hours of your time each week, beyond class time, quizzes and exams. Some of it
will be allocated to reading the textbook and your notes (2 hours per week). Practices on MyEconLab will help you
master the material and concepts needed for the quizzes and the exams (2 hours every week).
Important dates:
January 19 Last day to add winter term courses
Last day for late registration
Last day to drop winter term courses with no financial implications
February 5 Last day to change winter term courses from audit to credit (and vice versa)
Last day to drop winter term courses without a “W”
March 12 Last day to drop winter term courses with a “W”
Conversion of numerical grades to Final Letter Grades following the Dalhousie Common Grade Scale:
A+ (90-100) B+ (77-79) C+ (65-69) D (50-54)
A (85-89) B (73-76) C (60-64) F (<50)
A- (80-84) B- (70-72) C- (55-59)
Course Policies:
Considering that you have one week to complete each of the quizzes, we will not accept any excuses for late quizzes.
If a student misses the midterm for a valid reason, as defined in Section 16.8 of the University Calendar, then the
weight of the midterm will be added to the final exam. If a student performs better on the final exam than on the
midterm, then the weight of the midterm will be added to the final exam; i.e. the final exam will count as 70% of the
final grade. An early midterm will be offered only to those students with either a class conflict or a varsity sports
competition. If a student misses the final exam for a valid reason, as defined in Section 16.8 of the University
Calendar, the student will have the opportunity to write a make-up exam, scheduled after the end of the official exam
period. All exams must be written on-campus.
