ALHT week 7  Intelligence
Cassie
- Year 9 secondary school
- Referred to school psychologist
- Grades have fallen over past 12 months
oReferred for cognitive and academic ax
oFamily history of language and literacy difficulties so deemed ‘at risk’
Intelligence
- The most concise general definition of intelligence currently on offer is as follows:
“Intelligence is the set of mental abilities and talents that an organism can employ to
achieve its goals by overcoming challenges and obstacles”
- In both practical and scientific terms, the notion of ‘intelligence’ is usually not
conceived of or described in terms of absolute ability, but rather, is most commonly
employed as a means of comparing individuals to each other
- Intelligence is difficult to define in stand-along terms, because people are primarily
interested in Individual Differences
Cassie
- School performance has reduced over past 12 months
oCommenced year 9
oFamily history: language and literacy (Dean, also Uncle)
- Hypothesis: cognitive/academic demands are exceeding capacity
- Assessments: - these tests are co-normed
oWechsler Intelligence Scale for Children – Fourth edition. Australian Language
Adaptation (WISC-IV)  IQ ability
oWechsler Individuals Achievement Test – Second edition. Australian
Standardised Edition (WIAT-II Australian)  academic ability
Wechsler Scales
- Wechsler Scales measure IQ, not just as a single construct summarising intellect, but
as the distinct subsections of:
oVerbal intelligence – word-based comprehension and reasoning
oNon-verbal intelligence – working memory and processing speed
- This allows expert reviewers to make more informed estimates of intelligence
outside of school/academic contexts
WISC-IV
- Individual administration
- Age range: 6-16 years
o10 subtests to obtain FSIQ
o10 subtests to obtain Index Scores
o3 Core Verbal and 3 Core Perceptual Reasoning Subtests
o2 core working memory and 2 core processing speed subtests
- Administration time: median = 67 minutes
