ALHT week 9 Tutorial Group Dynamics and Processes Application to Allied Health Care
Practice
Social Influence
- The change in behaviour that one person causes in another, intentionally or
unintentionally, as a result of the way the changed person perceives themselves in
relationship to the influencer, other people and society in general
- Social influence affects individuals in group situations
oPeople behave differently in a crowd than they do as individuals
oIn a crowd, people may lose their personal identities and ability to judge right
from wrong
oBecome anonymous and no longer consider themselves accountable for their
behaviour = deindividualism
- Social influence includes:
oConformity
oObedience
Conformity
- Refers to a change in attitude or behaviour to accommodate the standards of peers
or groups
- The pressure to conform can be immense, even if subtle
Ways in which people conform
- Fashion of the day
- Food (diets)
- Drinks (eg. What you drink at the pub)
- What you study (the popularity of a course drives the atar up)
- Cueing at the bus stop
Why People Conform
- To be liked (avoid bullying, teasing)
- To ‘fit in’ (not being seen as different or oppositional)
- Need for social approval (normative conformity) societal expectations
- To be correct (informational conformity when someone lacks knowledge, they will
look to the group for direction and information, or if situation is ambiguous/unclear
how they should respond)
- Conform to a social role (identification eg. Role of a policeman, lawyer, labourer,
etc.)
Factors affecting Conformity
- Group size large groups elicit more conformity
- Dissention if even one member dissents from the group, others tend to follow their
own judgement
- Personality those with low self-esteem are more likely to conform
- Culture people from collectivist cultures are more likely to conform
- Gender women are more likely to conform than men
Asch’s Conformity Study
- Participants (7-9 uni students) were asked to judge line lengths while working in a
group. All but one were confederates
- As the confederates consistently gave obviously wrong answers, the participant
often conformed and gave the same wrong answer
