-Fist is a symbol of solidarity > first used in Russian revolution > used in 60s
-Purple is a feminist colour > 19th century women wore purple stockings to show
solidarity in part of the suffragette movement > First wave feminism
-1960s was second wave feminism
-1954 onwards saw boom in economy and the suburban family > women and men had
defined roles (men worked and women domestic) which saw gendered language in
advertising to seal roles into the culture > feminine role model and commodification
tied into one
-Counter culture addition > feminist voice
-The Feminine Mystique by Betty Friedan 1963 > discusses widespread unhappiness
of females in their housewife role despite material comfort > female magazines we're
made by women
-The Female Eunuch by Germaine Greer 1970 > females power was taken away by
being forced into the traditional suburban consumerist nuclear family
-DISCONNECT BETWEEN THE MALE IDEA OF WHAT MAKES WOMEN HAPPY
AND WHAT ACTUALLY MAKES WOMEN HAPPY > women not happy >
psychologists confused > high Valium and alcoholism
-Miss America protests Atlanta 1968 > women brought any item they thought were
items of oppression and "freedom trash cans" were set up and wanted to burn these
items > believe that women were treated like a commodity and like a piece of meat
-Laura Mulvey "You don't KNow what's happening. Do you mr JOnes? In Spare Rib
No.8 1973 > made an article to encapsulate the feelings of the time of women < when
we look we see something that is made up of our own desires and own experiences
from the world, we dont necessarily see what is there for real but we see what we
want to see and said that women were dressed up in the way men want to see them >
title of a bob Dylan song but she was referring to Allen Jones "chair and hatstand"
1969 where women were photographed as part of furniture
-Different types of feminist interventions >challenging the obsession with abstraction of
late modernism (abstract expressionism and minimalism)
