-Betty Beaumont Ocean Landmark 1980+ > reclaimation > got a container carrier and
filled it with tonnes of ash bricks (waste from processing coal) and had it floated out
into centre of the NY harbour and let it go into the bottom of the harbour > it created
an ecosystem and lush garden with the chemicals of the ash bricks mixing with the
chemicals of the after > done in a time of concern about the state of the NY harbour
-Andy Goldsworthy > ice rings focussing on transience and balance and it melting and
the cornerstone giving way
-THIS WORK ISNT IN THE PERIOD WE ARE STUDYING > what land art has
eveolved into > 2009 Mark Careth, Polar Bear ice sculpture Copenhagen >
environmental summit had commissioned him > he put a skeleton made of iron in it to
comment on the extinction of the polar bear and that when the people came out of the
summit to shake hands over all they've achieved they were confronted by what they
weren't be able to achieve
TUTORIAL
-Reminder: Week 11 tutorial will be a mock slide test, don't study artworks and their
makers because that information will be given to you.
-Initial reaction > context (cultural, movement, historical, artist) > formal analysis (line
colour, shape, etc)
-Consider what the artist wanted you to think and what you actually do think
(contemporary thoughts v. Thoughts of the time)
-Practice Visual Analysis IN GROUPS: Morimura “Futago - Twins“ 1988
-Morimura's "Futago" 1988 is a photograph. At first glance it looks like a painting,
however Morimura's use of early photoshop makes you question traditional
painting. He has also superimposed his face over the two subjects faces (the
model and the servant) so that it confuses and shocks the audience. Translation
of the title futago means twins referring to the fact his face appears twice in the
work. The more you look at the image, the more of the familiarities to the tradition
of the reclining nude become unfamiliar as he inserts references to context of the
1980s.
-Comment on the context of time of the 1980s about gender identity and racial
identity being a taboo topic and being launched into regular discussion.
Questions male authority by putting a male in the position where a female
traditionally lay for male pleasure. This is emphasised by the subject demanding
the gaze of the audience.
