Bacterial growth & metabolic regulation:
Growth of microbes:
Increase in number of cells, NOT CELL SIZE
One cell becomes a colony of millions of
cells
Control of growth is important for
o Infection control
o Growth of industrial and biotech organisms
Factors regulating growth:
o Nutrients
o Environmental conditions:
Temperature
pH
Osmotic pressure
High salt or high sugar (think honey)
o Generation time
How quick it grows
Bacterial division:
Bacteria divide by binary fission
Alternative means:
o Budding
o Conidiospores (filamentous bacteria)
o Fragmentation
Logarithmic growth
Generation time:
Time required for cell to divide/for population to double
Average for bacteria is 1-3 hours
E coli generation time = 20 mins
o 20 generations (7 hours), 1 cell becomes 1 million
cells
o Very quick generation time
