Bacterial growth & metabolic regulation:
Growth of microbes:
• Increase in number of cells, NOT CELL SIZE
• One cell becomes a colony of millions of
cells
• Control of growth is important for
o Infection control
o Growth of industrial and biotech organisms
• Factors regulating growth:
o Nutrients
o Environmental conditions:
• Temperature
• pH
• Osmotic pressure
▪ High salt or high sugar (think honey)
o Generation time
• How quick it grows
Bacterial division:
• Bacteria divide by binary fission
• Alternative means:
o Budding
o Conidiospores (filamentous bacteria)
o Fragmentation
• Logarithmic growth
Generation time:
• Time required for cell to divide/for population to double
• Average for bacteria is 1-3 hours
• E coli generation time = 20 mins
o 20 generations (7 hours), 1 cell becomes 1 million
cells
o Very quick generation time
