For all young people need to explain the process of counselling. Young people can give assent to counselling, even if they are not capable of giving fully informed consent: ethically, this conveys respect for the client. Ethics and law can be in conflict when counselling minors: conflict about confidentiality or decision-making. Very little in ethics codes about rights of minor clients counsellor judgment required. Effective counselling with young people often involves parents: may be useful to have them in initial session with young person, difficult to balance rights of parents vs. minor. Important to address what kind and how much information they will be provided with about thei(cid:396) (cid:272)hild(cid:859)s (cid:272)ou(cid:374)selli(cid:374)g: explain to parents that disclosing all information to them can jeopardise the trust between child and counsellor. Inform the child ahead of time and then disclose the information to the parent or refuse to disclose the information to the parent.
