HLSC122 Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Evidence-Based Practice
Evidence based Practice
● Leads to the highest quality of care and the best patient outcomes
● Reduces healthcare costs and geographical variation in the delivery of healthcare
● Purpose is to assist in clinical decision making and to make informed decisions
● Greatest importance lies in its goal - to help both health professionals and patients to
make an informed decision on what is the best evidence based care and what is best
for the patient at that point in time
● Patients are increasingly coming to healthcare professionals with health information -
obtained from google etc - must be able to assess the accuracy of that information
and determine whether it is suitable for the patient
● Important role in facilitating our professional accountability and responsibility to
ensure practice is informed by the best available evidence
● EBP ensures that health resources are used wisely
Define Evidence based practice (EBP)
● “The conscientious, explicit and judicious use of current best evidence in making
decisions about the care of the individual patient.”
● It means integrating individual clinical expertise with the best available external
clinical evidence from systematic research
4 pronged approach to EBP
● Clinical expertise
● Research evidence
● Information from the practice context
○ Rural/Urban?
○ Australian, German?
○ Public/Private?
● Patient values, circumstances etc
4 ‘A’s of Research (awareness, appreciation, application, ability)
1. Awareness of and access to the research literature
2. Appreciation or the ability to understand and critique the language of research
3. Application of research findings to local practice settings
4. Ability to conduct original (primary) research independently or in a team
5 Steps of EBP
1. ASK - a Clinical question PICO/PICo - PICO quantitative, PICo qualitative
