NRSG138 Lecture Notes - Lecture 10: Hand Washing, Foodborne Illness
Environmental factors affecting AL
● Include
○ Atmospheric components
■ Organic and inorganic particles
● Pollen, pathogenic microorganisms, vectors (flies and lice)
■ Light rays
● From sun
● Electronically operated apparatus
● Technological apparatus
● Burning candles
■ Sound waves
○ Clothing
○ Household environment
○ Vegetation
○ Buildings
Organic and inorganic particles
Countless particles or organic or inorganic matter in the atmosphere
Dust is everywhere and dust prevention is important to infection control
Organic matter eg pathogenic microorganisms - cause infection
● If fever, potential to affect AL of controlling body temperature
● Other pathogens
○ Inflammation in the intestines - food poisoning
● Three ALs likely affected are eating and drinking, elimination and controlling body
temperature
● Many prophylactic measures can be taken in the home, workplace, recreationally and
in hospital to prevent infection and its spread eg handwashing
Effect of atmospheric components on the AL
● Breathing - atmosphere at high altitudes - reduced oxygen content
● Environmental temperature and humidity - controlling body temperature and sleeping
● Atmospheric turbulence - gale force winds, thunder, storms or cyclones/hurricanes,
will all modify the ALs of maintaining a safe environment
Light rays
● All around us
● Many properties that influence humans
● Some helpful and some adverse
● The atmosphere transmits light rays
○ Light rays not only stimulate the sense of light in normal eyes but also
provides the ambience for various ALs
○ Eg communicating, eating and drinking, expressing spirituality
Sun’s rays
● Provide the earth with energy and heat
● The carbon dioxide and other gases in the atmosphere absorb some of this energy,
forming a blanket that returns additional heat to the earth - Greenhouse effect

Document Summary
Pollen, pathogenic microorganisms, vectors (flies and lice) Countless particles or organic or inorganic matter in the atmosphere. Dust is everywhere and dust prevention is important to infection control. Organic matter eg pathogenic microorganisms - cause infection. If fever, potential to affect al of controlling body temperature. Three als likely affected are eating and drinking, elimination and controlling body temperature. Many prophylactic measures can be taken in the home, workplace, recreationally and in hospital to prevent infection and its spread eg handwashing. Breathing - atmosphere at high altitudes - reduced oxygen content. Environmental temperature and humidity - controlling body temperature and sleeping. Atmospheric turbulence - gale force winds, thunder, storms or cyclones/hurricanes, will all modify the als of maintaining a safe environment. Light rays not only stimulate the sense of light in normal eyes but also provides the ambience for various als. Eg communicating, eating and drinking, expressing spirituality. Provide the earth with energy and heat.
