ENGN1211 Lecture Notes - Lecture 9: Regenerative Medicine, Tissue Engineering
Tissue engineering
• Regenerative medicine -provide the setting and encouragement to regrow cells
• Engineering molecules- designs molecules so they behave in a particular way
• Nanotechnology-
• Stabbing science into the brain
• Mimicking the extracellular matrix- provides biochemical signals, structure, everything
that’s not the cells
• Tricks stem cells into becoming brain cells
• Incorporate drugs or other biological materials into doing things at the right time
• Material needs to be a mostly watery material —> need to transmit signals through
aqueous environment —>
• fnocdfab peptide —> make up proteins —> what makes you you
• Three parts:
◦ Behaves different in different pHs
◦ Stacking molecule
◦ Polypeptide
• Acid makes molecule behave acidity- right charges at pH 7
• Blood brain barrier stops anything from getting into your brain
• Overtime you cut into the brain
• Modify the drugs so they stick to the material e.g. inactivating immune response first,
tissue making diffuses out second, making blood vessels diffuses out
• Check out bit in acknowledgements
Robotic vision- computational human activity analysis
• Analyze human activity
• Applications:
◦ Surveillance
◦ Driving
◦ Robots as surgeons
• Temporal encoding of videos
• Deep neural network
◦ Take data and can learn features and how to solve it, the networks can learn
features and predict automatically human activity, replicating what brains
do
• Hope to be able to develop robots that can see
