PHYS1001 Lecture Notes - Lecture 9: Voltage Source
Lecture 9- Magnetic Force
• Dipole—> two equal and opposite charges very closely separated
◦ E.g. bar magnet
◦ Fnet is small ones beings pulled and ones being pushed
• When two magnets are close together they act more like monopoles
• When the magnets are further apart they act more like dipoles
Magnetic force
• Comes from moving charges
• A charge which moves through an external magnetic field will experience a force
• The magnetic force is always at a right angle to the velocity of a charged particle
• If a particle enters a magnetic field it will travel in a circle —> because of the force
• If v and B are along the same axis Magnetic force =0
• Include sign with charge
