Instinctual mental response facilitate a response to an external or internal event of significance for the organism: compared to other psychological states, emotions have two unique qualities, are embodied, less susceptible to our intentions. Limited number of basic and universal human emotions: charles darwin - "the expression of the emotions in man and animals" (1872, tomkins, ekman, izard and their colleagues (1960s and 70s) List of basic emotions: happy, sad, scared, angry, pride, surprise, disgust, ekman"s theory (see video, distinctive universal signals (cross-cultural, not due to influences from pop-culture, but because they exist in some fundamental and instinctive way, universal antecedent event. Some stimuli - sadness is expressed when something is lost: distinctive physiology/dedicated neural circuits. Facial action coding system (facs: codes morphology as "action units" (aus) Subjective quality, positive or negative, of the emotional response to a specific object or event: alternative 2: componential, pleasantness check, pleasant - au12, unpleasant - au15.
