Schizophrenia is a complex illness that disrupts the normal functioning of the human brain, often causing sufferer to live in an altered state of reality (barnett, 2018). With over thirty symptoms, people with schizophrenia experiences issues that affect their cognition, behaviour, mood speech and overall psychological functioning (barnett, 2018). These symptoms are grouped into positive, negative and cognitive symptoms (owen, sawa & Positive symptoms include, but are not limited to; delusions, hallucinations, and overall psychosis (meyer & maccabe, 2016). Cognitive symptoms include: deficits in most forms of memory and processing, limited attention and troubles learning (walther & strik, With such an extensive list of symptoms, and due to the fact that each person with the illness may experience different symptoms to different degrees, it is unclear what exactly causes schizophrenia (owen, sawa & mortensen, 2016).
