We have certain parts of the body that function to provide ongoing stability of the body. The
functioning body is created by interdependence
Parts of society (social institutions: education, religion, family) form a health of society as a
whole.
Modern society is a functioning evolution, there’s a reason why it is why it is.
Skeptical of revolution
Crime has a function in society, is good for the economy/jobs
Poverty, is a necessary part of a functioning society- poor people do jobs others wouldn’t
A figure in history
Modern man is becoming more and more free of the body
- Slow changes= fine and normal
- Quick/Rapid Changes= dangerous
Feminists:
‘Mother earth’ – why are women associated with nature, because they don’t naturally occur in
society in progress. They are tied to ature and their body.
Feminists politizise their relationship with the body
Madernity was built on slavery
The Body as a social fact
Bodily Techniques: not just what we do with our bodies but also can involve technical
objects. : eg. Walking, running, swimming are recognized in society
Expressive Body movement: (eg. body language, posture, gesture, facial expression serve as
non verbal expression and language) Expressive capacities of the body: sign language. Give
directions to people without giving hand gestures we do it as part of being a social/
embodied being.
Body ethos (Greek word” the art of being ones self, relationship of the self to the self, attitude
to ones own body) to be social and civilized is to ignore the fact that we have a body. What
our body tells us about our social reality.
