Document Summary

Week 9 - introduction to the nervous system. Both systems sense changes in normal physiological set points (homeostasis), analyses the information and responds to changes or stimuli. Sensory - detects internal and external stimuli external - something that happens around us/outside the body e. g. sensing temperature internal - something that happens within the body e. g. when you sit up and the blood pressure needs to change. Integrative - processes the sensory information and makes decisions for appropriate response. Central nervous system (cns) brain and spinal cord. Peripheral nervous system (pns) everything else spinal nerves cranial nerves has 3 further sub-divisions somatic nervous system autonomic nervous system enteric nervous system. Somatic nervous system (sns) sensory neurons relay information to the central nervous systems. Motor neurons that take the response and conduct signals from the cns to the skeletal muscle. Axon hillock - the join between the cell body and the axon axon collateral axon terminal - the end of the axon.
