Abdominal vasculature
Aorta
The main trunk of the systemic arterial circulation, comprising four
parts: the ascending aorta, the arch of the aorta, the thoracic portion
of the descending aorta, and the abdominal portion of the descending
aorta. It starts at the aortic opening of the left ventricle, rises a short
distance, bends over the root of the left lung, descends within the
thorax on the left side of the vertebral column, and passes through the
aortic hiatus of the diaphragm into the abdominal cavity. It branches
into the two common iliac arteries.
aortic, adj.
Inferior Vena Cava
A large vein formed by the union of the two common iliac veins that
receives blood from the lower limbs and the pelvic and abdominal
viscera and empties into the right atrium of the heart. Also called
postcava
.
Arteries
Hollow elastic tubes that carry blood away
from the heart
Tunica intima (inner layer) which itself has
three layers
Tunica media (middle layer)
Tunica adventitia (external layer)
Aorta
Largest principal artery in the body
Divided into five sections:
Root of the aorta
Ascending aorta and arch
Descending aorta
Abdominal aorta and abdominal aortic
branches
Bifurcation of the aorta into iliac arteries
