Chemical fundamentals (CHM-108)
Introduction to Chemistry:
Chemistry: the study of matter and the changes it undergoes.
Matter: anything that takes up space and has mass
Substance: is a form of matter that has a definite com..
Mixture: is a combination of two or more substances in which the substance retain their
distinct identifiers.
Homogenouse mixture: which is uniform throughout.
Heterogeneous mixture: a mixture which does not have the same composition,
properties and appearance throughout
Atom: a neutral particle having one nucleus(the smallest representative sample of an
element)
Ion: a charged chemical species
Cation: a positively charged ion
Anion: a negatively charged ion
Covalent bond: a chemical bond in which two atoms share one or more pairs of
electrons
Electrons: a substance particle with a charge of -1 that is outside an atomic nucleus
Element: a substance that cannot be separated into simpler substance (82 elements
are naturally occurring on earth)
Compound: is a substance that is composed of two or more elements (can only be
separated into its components)
Physical change: does not alter the composition or identity of a substance (eg. sugar
dissolved into water)
Chemical change: alters the composition or identity of the substance(s) involved (eg. )
Extensive property: of a material is dependent upon the amount of the substance
present (mass, height,etc)
Intensive property: is independent of the amount of the substance that is present.
