Lecture 6 - Gypsum
Dental models are used as a foundation for the majority of prosthodontic
products
Composition
- Calcium sulfate dihydrate
- Heated → plaster of paris → water → gypsum
- Short setting time, reasonably strong, accurate models, cheap, non toxic,
convenient to use
- Brittle (strength in tension lower than strength in compression) → fracture if
dropped or chip or flake in repeated use
Plaster/stone/die stone
- Chemically identical
- Different size and shape of particles
- Thus differing in strength of the materials
- Gypsum products unstable at temps over 40C
