their parents “mother” and “father” rather than the more common “mum” and “dad”. In Korean,

and “Ji” respectively adds another layer of respect.
-Also, younger Koreans will often call elderly people, and middle aged people “Grandma and
Grandpa” and “Aunty and Uncle” respectively. This shows respect to the elders in their society.

their parents in when they are adults and they live with them in their own home with their
entire family rather than send them to a retirement home or something similar.
-There are a lot of titles in Korea that are used to address people who are of a certain
profession or are older than you or more superior in some way. They also differentiate
between genders in which titles they use.
-For example, a young boy would call his older brother, or an older male friend who is close
“hyung”. But a young girl would call her older brother or a close older male friend “oppa”.
However, there is no gender specific term for politely addressing someone younger than you,
males and females can both say “dongsaeng” to someone younger than them.
