Document Summary

Cellular life can be divided into 3 domains- bacteria, archaea and eukaryotes. Archaea and bacteria have prokaryotic cells (lacks membrane organelles eg: nucleus and chloroplasts) Eukaryotes have eukaryotic cells (have membrane bound organelles) Nb: cytosol- cell juice within the cytoplasm that stuff swims around in. *nucleus suspended in center of cell, golgi stacks cluster around the nucleus. All cells are small (p cells 1-5um, e cells 10-100um) Must maintain a high sa:v ratio to exchange molecules with the environment and increase. All cells are bound by a plasma membrane (separates cell from its environment and regulates the passage of molecules in/out of composed of a phospholipid bilayer cell)- Surrounded by the nuclear envelope (double membrane) Substances travel between the cytoplasm and nucleoplasm via nuclear pores (surrounded by proteins that regulate movement in/out of cell) Stores genetic information in the form of chromatin. Function= synthesizes amino acids to form polypeptides.
