BIOL1002 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder, Purpura, Synaptogenesis
Document Summary
In normal postnatal development of kitten, axons from each eye enter the cortex: they grow larger dendritic branches. If one eye is sewn shut, between 30-60 days, the termination from that eye do not develop. Example imprinting: best-known form is filial imprinting where a young animal acquires its behavioural characteristics from its parents, konrad lorenz demonstrated how geese would imprint on the first moving stimulus they saw within. 13-16 hours of hatching: lorenz also found that the geese could imprint on inanimate objects they followed a box placed on a model train in circles around the track, underlying mechanism imprint on most appropriate object. Weirdly, when animal reached puberty, they had a sexual preference for the object they imprinted on. Developmental disability: abnormal brain development or injury is typically associated with impaired cognition. Development disability dendrites: purpura examined intellectually disabled children"s brains post-mortem, dendrite growth was significantly stunted & dendritic spines very sparse.
