HUMB2009 Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Rheumatoid Arthritis, Osteophyte, Osteoporosis
Document Summary
Ult: mainly hands (but the joints also the weight-bearing joints of the ll) Radiographs: narrowing of the joint space, osteophytes along bone edges, joint space very irregular different when compared to rheumatoid arthritis (smooth edges) Symptoms: pain, crunchy sound when joints move, less range of motion, joint stiffness. Ra begins as an inflammation of the synovial membrane (synovitis) that lines the joints. Xr: soft tissue swelling at early stage caused by joint effusion and hyperplastic synovial inflammation small foci of destruction at the edges of joints. Narrowing of the joint spaces caused by destruction of articular cartilage. Ct: demonstrates erosions and rheumatoid nodules at soft tissues (ulnar-wrist and olecranon) *narrowing of jt space hand and wrist can be studied using arthroscopy, mri and us. Promotes a communication between the shoulder joint and the sub-acromial bursa. Rotator cuff muscles: teres minor, infraspinatus, supraspinatus, subscapularis m. Mri: preferred modality, normal rotator cuff appears black, tear cause it to have high signal intensity.
