Document Summary

True wide of 6cm is only represented as 4. 5cm on the surface due to oblique position of the kidneys. Lie alongside vertebral column, against psoas major and on the quadratus lumborum muscles, in an oblique plane. Orientation: the long axes slope forward and laterally about 20 degrees from msp and downwards in conformity with the long axis of psoas major. Kidney lie at an angle of around 30 degrees from the coronal plane. The upper pole lies more posteriorly than the lower pole due to the size of psoas. Abnormal axis caused by extrinsic pressure from liver, spleen or masses. Right kidney lies mainly anterior to 12th rib and left lies anterior to 11th ribs.
