What: have I learned about patient safety?
Yes. ‘Safety’ can be defined as freedom from avoidable injuries. Its goal is to avoid,
prevent and ameliorate adverse outcomes emanating from the care processes.
Outline the role of the nurse in providing safe care.
Nurses should follow Australian safety and quality care framework to deliver care to
p.t. including consumer-centred, driven by information and organized by safety.
So what: impact will this have on my nursing practice?
Failed to provide safe care to p.t. will have following impacts:
a. Falls risk, pressure injury, hospital acquired infection, blood transfusion
risk, life threatening outcomes
b. P.t. couldn’t receive satisfying care.
c. Nurses couldn’t promote nursing practice.
Now what: will I do to ensure my care is safe?
Provide examples of processes and resources designed to enhance patient safety
a. Risk assessment tools
b. Check lists or care plans (they also have drawbacks like not based on
individual needs, waste time, do not highlight important places, nurses are
too focus on ticking on everything while forgetting the most important)
c. Nation standards safety and quality framework
d. Hospital policy & guidelines
e. Nursing board scope of practice
Case study
You are on clinical placement as a first year nursing student. You are caring for Mark, a 47
year old man admitted for a laparoscopic cholecystectomy with your preceptor. Mark is
experiencing mild postoperative pain and has and order for oral paracetamol. You watch
your preceptor dispense the medication, and she asks if you could take the tablets in to
Mark so that she can check IV medications with one of the other nurses.
In your team, consider the following questions:
1. Would you help your preceptor in this way? Why or Why not?
