We must consider the behaviour or thought within: the immediate &/or social context, the cultural background. It is something that happens to the person. Three important criteria for judging psychopathology: distressing, dysfunctional, deviation from norms. Mood refers to a long lasting emotional state that influences our perception of the world: good moods fill us with energy and sens of wonder, bad moods leave us feeling islated and alone. Both positive and negative mood become pathological (problematic) when hey start to affect our ability to learn, work and function. Cognitive symptoms: negative cognitions about self or world or future. Motivational symptoms: loss of interest, lack of drive, cant start things. Somatic symptoms: loss of energy, loss appetite, sleep difficulties. Different forms of bipolar: bipolar 1- severity of manic episodes is differences (more severe)
