Regulated worker = someone who has completed an accredited
course leading to a qualification in health, then obtains
registration to work in the field (eg nurses, midwives,
optometrists, pharmacists etc)
Unregulated = training courses may be accredited but no
registration is required. (eg paramedics, social workers, patient
care assistants etc). They are not accountable to a regulation
board
Importance of regulation
Accountability and governance
National standards of education programs
Inc patient safety, quality, competence in skills, job security, status
of worker
Components of regulation
Governed by law
Governed by a board eg APRA
Qualifications are through accredited course
Examples of regulation
Protection of public standards are policies that workers must
meet, under their codes of practice to ensure high level of
standards and scope of practice
Organization providing registration provides orientation, training,
job roles, skills, qualifications, criminal screening, immunizations
and delegation responsibilities
Examples of missing regulation
Breaches of standards, imposed scopes of practices, non
compliance, not meeting standards, breaking the law
