WEEK 8 CODES AND STANDARDS
Registered nurse standards of practice core standards by which
performance is assessed to obtain/retain your registration. They
provide framework by assessing your competence as an RN
The 7 standards:
1. Thinks critically and analyses nursing practice
2. Engages in therapeutic and professional relationships
3. Maintains capability for practice
4. Comprehensively conducts assessments
5. Develops a plan for nursing practice
6. Provides safe, appropriate and responsive quality
nursing practice
7. Evaluates outcomes to inform nursing practice
Code of ethics identifies fundamental ethical standards and
values to which nursing profession is committed, provides
reference point to reflect on conduct of themselves and others,
and guides ethical decision making and practice, and indicates
the human rights standards and ethical values nurses are
expected to hold
EG code of ethics
1. Nurse and people nurses responsibility is to people
requiring nursing care, must provide and environment in
which human rights/values/customs/spiritual beliefs
are respected, ensures individual receives
accurate/sufficient/timely info in culturally appropriate
manner, holds in confidence personal info and uses
judgement in sharing this info, and advocates for equity
and social justice
2. Nurses and practice nurse carries personal
responsibility and accountability, maintains standards of
personal health to not compromise care provided, uses
judgement with individual competence, maintains
standards of personal conduct, ensures compatibility
with safety/dignity/rights of people, fosters and
maintains practice culturing promoting ethical behaviour
and open dialogue
