Immune System
Signs of Inflammation
Anatomical: redness, swelling, heat, pain, impaired function
Histological: leukocytes accumulate in inflamed tissues
Two main immune response pathways:
Humoral pathway (invloes B lympocytes: mature in red bone marrow)
Cell-mediated pathway (invloves T lymphocytes - mature in thymus)
Humoral Immunity:
Antibodies: proteins secreted by activated B lymphocytes, bind to antigens
Antigens: any chemical which elicits an immune response
Humoral Response:
Antigen determinant: the region of an antigen that is recognised by the antibody
Anti-bodies and antigens bind to each other to form immune complexes
Types of Antibodies
IgG: most abundant (75-85%)
IgA: found in bodily secretions
IgE: causes cells to release histamine
IgD: attached to the surface of B cells
IgM: first type released in primary response
Antigens an antibodies bind to each other to form immune complexes
Consequences of immune complex formation:
Neutralisation of toxic antigens
Formation of inflammatory mediators
Activation of leukocytes
Destruction of bacteria
In the presence of a foreign antigen, B cells are stimulated to become either:
Plasma cells (Actively secrete antibodies)
Memory cells (remeber specific antigen, to prepare body for next time)
Primary and secondary humeral responses:
Primary: initial encounter with antigen
Secondary: can be years later, clone of cells identical to ancestral cells
Cell-mediated response
Antigen receptor interaction occur on the cell surface
Two types of interactions:
Helper T (TH) cells: with antigen-presenting cells
Stimulate B cells to make antibodies (TH2 response)
Stimulate other T cells (TH1 response)
Cytoxic T (TC) cells: with abnormal/virus infected cells
release special defence proteins (perforins: dills holes into abnormal target cells)
and (granzymes: digestive enzymes that enter abnormal cell via holes)
HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus)
Causes AIDS
Virus infects and destroys helper T cells
