"No man is an island,
Entire of itself,
Every man is a piece of the continent,
A part of the main.
If a clod be washed away by the sea,
Europe is the less.
As well as if a promontory were.
As well as if a manor of thy friend's
Or of thine own there:
Any man's death diminishes me,
Because I am involved in mankind,
And therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls;
It tolls for thee."
John Donne (1572-1631)

Efforts at cooperation after the Napoleonic wars
Concert of Europe, international law

Massive destructive power of industrialised nation-states
o WW1: 17 million deaths
Intended to prevent another world war, promote disarmament
Woodrow Wilson:
"A general association of nations must be formed under specific covenants for the
purpose of affording mutual guarantees of political independence and territorial
integrity to great and small states alike."
But USA never joins

1935: Italian invasion of Abyssinia (Ethiopia)
Failure to stop Germany, Italian and Soviet involvement in Spanish Civil War
