Document Summary

Example: osmotic diuretics, activated charcoal (very high sa). Drugs binding to a protein produce structural change. Inhibition by provision of similar molecules that compete with substrate to occupy active binding site on enzyme but do not bond with other reagents to produce product. Inhibition by provision of similar molecules that compete with substrate to occupy allosteric site on enzyme but do not bond with other reagents to produce product. Drugs may bind to active binding site (ie where substrate is site ith oduct. enic, Drugs may bind to active binding site (ie where substrate is supposed to bind) or allosteric site: binding site for non- substrate molecule (ie drug) that alters physical conformation of receptor and inactivates it. Agonist: drug acts on receptor and causes normal response. Antagonist: drug binds to receptor but does not cause response. Function as agonist but bind to allosteric site rather than active bonding site.
