BU1104 Lecture 10: The Control Process
The Control Process
• Begins the establishment of clear standards of performance
• Involves a comparison of actual performance to desired performance
• Takes a corrective action to repair performance deficiencies
• Is a dynamic, cybernetic process
• Consists of feedback control, concurrent control feedforward control
Setting standards,
• A good standard must enable goal achievement
• Listening to customers or observing competitors
• Benchmarking other companies
o Determine what to benchmark
o Identify the companies against which to benchmark
o Collect data to determine others companies performance standards
Comparison to standards
Does Actual Performance = Performance Standard?
Corrective action
• Identify performance deviations.
• Analyse those deviations
• Develop and implement programs to correct them.
Dynamic, cybernetic process
INSERT SCREENSHOT
Feedforward, concurrent and feedback control
• Feedforward control (inputs): monitor performance inputs rather than outputs to prevent or
minimise performance deficiencies before they occur
• Concurrent control (transformation):Gather information about performance deficiencies as
they occur
• Feedback control (Outputs): Gather information about performance deficiencies after they
occur
