HS1003 Lecture Notes - Lecture 4: Depth Perception, Object Permanence, Subjective Constancy
Document Summary
Suggests infants have memories prior to acquiring language. Implications for parent/child relationships: young babies begin to recognise their parents quickly at young age. Visual thinking: newborns prefer images with contours and edges of light and dark e. g. human faces, 2-3 mths = prefer images of complexity and curvature. Depth perception: refers to a sense of how far away objects are or appear to be, and ability to judge the distance of objects from each other and from ourselves. Infants begin to develop this when they can focus on objects at different distances, 2-3 mths: crawling skills may enable distances to be perceived more accurately, when crawling, far away objects to move less than nearby objects. Anticipation of visual events: think about what they"re seeing, e. g. smile to people they know. Infants anticipation of visual events which haven"t yet occurred: suggests infants think about what they see, don"t just register.
