When answering the essay question, it is important to define:
• The characteristics that make up the Scientific Method.
Deconstructing the Essay Question
What is the Scientific Method?
What are the main elements?
• One important characteristic is falsifiability.
• Popper developed the idea of falsifiability as a criterion for scientific validity
• “the criterion of the scientific status of a theory is its falsifiability, or refutability, or testability”
• i.e. predictions derived from it could potentially be shown to be false.
So, in answering the essay question, consider for example, whether theories in Psychology can be
falsified?
• In other words, can we set up experiments (or ask questions) in psychology in a way that would they
could be refuted after being tested, or can they all be interpreted to support the hypothesis?
Important Considerations
• What characteristics make up a scientific method?
• In other words, what criterion needs to be met in order for a theory to be ranked as scientific?
• Another helpful way to think of this is what is the difference between science and pseudo-science?
• OR how do you differentiate a scientific theory from a pseudoscientific theory?
• Such qualities characterise a testable or scientific hypothesis.
• Do theories in Psychology meet these characteristics? • Why/ why not? Explain.
