Effects of drugs are caused solely by pharmacological effects. Some drugs are instantly addictive: gateway of one drug leads to many more "harder" drugs. A medicine or other substance which has a physiological effect when ingested or otherwise introduced into the body. It can be processed to make heroin: a year in the 1980s, over 25 million americans tried cocaine. Animals experiments and er surveys found that cocaine was one of the most addictive and toxic drugs. However, only a small percentage goes for treatment, help or get arrested. In a survey of cocaine users: 29% take drug opportunistically, 29% purchase own but use infrequently, Only 14% is categorised as compulsive and addicted: opium: a sig % of heroin users use regularly, in controlled, ritualised way (robson, p. 23) "a system of shared ideas, rules and meanings that underlie and are expressed in the ways that humans live"
