NSW Centre for Road Safety – RS Education Programs:

NSW Centre for Road Safety → the focus of kids and traffic team is
early childhood services (educators, children and families)
o The team provides professional development road safety education
workshops across all areas of early childhood curriculum, ideas for
road safety strategies and resources and learning experiences for
children, road safety policy support and information and advice across
a number of sectors including:

across curriculum areas, by teachers in three NSW school sectors:
▪ Department of Schools and Communities
▪ Catholic Education Commission NSW
▪ Association of Independent Schools of NSW

designed to support road safety education in each of the six stages, K-

Road Safety education: implication for early childhood educators –
o Traffic and travel is part of everyday life – thus RS education needs to be part
of everyday life
o Early childhood educators are well placed to incorporate road safety education
in their daily practice when working with children and families, because they:
o Have ongoing and trusting relationships with children and families
o Can follow up on children’s interests
o Understand early childhood pedagogy and development
o Know the changing and diverse needs of the local context and
community

o Road safety education is an ideal and effective way to partner with families
involving them in curriculum decisions around their children’s road safety
learning and in developing road safety policies, including safe arrivals and
departures
o While “families are children’s first and most influential educators”, “learning
outcomes are most likely to be achieved when early childhood educators work
in partnership with families…” (EYLF)

o 21% pedestrians
o 5% pedal cyclists
o 1% motorcyclists
o The majority are still passengers/pedestrians, but now 5% of casualties are
pedal cyclists
Casualties NSW 10-14 Years –
