Social and Emotional Learning
• Social and emotional learning is the process through which children and adults
acquire and effectively apply the knowledge, attitudes and skills necessary to
understand and manage emotions, set and achieve positive goals, feel and
show empathy for others, establish and maintain positive relationships and
make responsible decisions
• SEL is the process whereby children (and adults) develop essential social and
emotional competencies to:
o Recognise and manage emotions (self)
o Handle oneself and tasks effectively (self)
o Develop care and concern for others (others)
o Establish positive relationships (others)
o Make responsible decisions (decision-making)
• Learning environments are not just about academic success
Evidence of Enhanced Learning –
• Durlak, Weissberg, Dymnicki, Taylor and Schellinger (2011) meta review of
213 studies involving 270,034 kindergarten through high school students
demonstrated:
o Better academic performance → achievement scores an average of
11 percentile points higher than students who did not receive SEL
instruction
o Improved attitudes and behaviours → greater motivation to learn,
deeper commitment to school, increased time devoted to schoolwork
and better classroom behaviour
o Fewer negative behaviours → decreased disruptive class beahviour,
noncompliance, aggression, delinquent acts and disciplinary referrals
o Reduced emotional distress → fewer reports of student depression,
anxiety, stress and social withdrawal
