Evolution of symbionts and origin and spread of new. Come from other animals which they have been associated with for a long time, and now they are transferred onto us - zoonoses. Commensal: symbiont that benefits and does not harm the other. Parasite: symbiont that benefits and harms the other partner. Zoonosis: a disease resulting from a parasite for which humans are a novel (new) host. Demodex lives in our hair follicles - helps people not go bald. Successful mite because doesn"t do us any harm so has been allowed to spread. Feel itchy and realise something is wrong so we go and consult doctor. We try to control or wipe out the mite. Things that are harmful to us are things that we react to. We will try to get rid of those that are a problem. With the itch mite, we would seek advice and get a mite-killing shampoo.
